Women and the Law
The Office for Women (OfW) plays a key role in providing policy advice on legal matters affecting women and works closely with other Commonwealth Departments and Agencies. This work includes advancing justice for women in the legal system through addressing issues such as the substantial under-representation of women in the judiciary, women's access to legal assistance and services, the family law system and the operation of the Federal Sex Discrimination Act 1984.
OfW regularly provides input into Parliamentary, Australian Law Reform Commission, Family Law Council and Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission inquiries and liaises with other agencies on issues such as sexual harassment, women in the legal profession, trafficking of women and girls, censorship, pregnancy discrimination, the operation of domestic violence legislation and other issues concerning women and the law.
